Sweden has been a significant producer of wood pellets in recent years. Wood pellets are commonly used as a source of renewable energy for heating and electricity generation. Sweden has been actively promoting the use of bioenergy, including wood pellets, as part of its efforts to transition to a more sustainable energy system.
According to data from the Swedish National Statistical Office (SCB) and a survey conducted by Tidningen Bioenergi, Sweden achieved a new production record of 1,809,433 tons of wood pellets in 2022, an increase of 56,000 tons compared to 2021. Compared to 2021, Sweden's wood pellet production increased by 3.1% in 2022.
In 2022, Sweden witnessed a remarkable milestone in its
wood pellet production, generating a substantial energy output of nearly 9 TWh. However, the dynamics of pellet trade experienced significant shifts throughout the year. While pellet imports surged, pellet exports faced a decline, resulting in a decrease in net exports from 129,000 tons to 34,000 tons.
When considering the overall figures, exports in 2022 diminished by approximately 50,000 tons, reflecting an 18% decline compared to the previous year. On the other hand, imports witnessed a significant rise of 45,000 tons, denoting a substantial 29% increase over 2021.
Consequently, the combined impact of heightened production, augmented imports, and reduced exports contributed to a notable surge in the total volume of pellets available in the Swedish market. Comparing 2022 to 2021, the pellet supply observed an increase of 150,000 tons, equivalent to a 9.2% growth.
The total supply of pellets within the Swedish market for 2022 amounted to 1,775,751 tons, signifying the ample availability of this renewable energy resource in the country. These figures highlight Sweden's sustained dedication to promoting sustainable energy practices and the significance of wood pellets in its renewable energy mix.
