Wood pellets are an environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional cordwood fuel. Wood pellets are an increasingly popular source of fuel that can be used in homes and businesses to heat buildings and generate electricity. They are a processed biomass fuel that is easy to handle and transport has high energy density, and provides lower capital costs for large-scale conversion projects. However, the handling and storage requirements for air-dried white pellets are often more costly than those of a conventional woody biomass system because they require covered fuel storage and specialized, expensive handling equipment. That's where the new advanced wood pelletizing apparatus comes in, setting new standards in biomass conversion.
To alleviate these costs, Kingwood is developing advanced wood pelletizing apparatus that produces composite pellets that combine the benefits of both air-dried and extruded woody biomass fuels. The composite pellets are produced in a form that is less volatile than air-dried wood pellets and have improved properties such as durability, stability, moisture resistance, and temperature tolerance. These advances reduce the costs associated with handling and storage of the fuel and allow it to be used in existing facilities that are not designed to operate with traditional air-dried pellets.
This technology is a significant advance in the field of biomass pellet manufacturing and offers the potential to significantly improve economic justification for conversion from air-dried white wood pellets to the new, advanced pellet. The advanced pellets are less volatile and have a low ash content which reduces the cost of processing and handling, while their enhanced physical properties provide a range of downstream benefits such as reduced dust control costs and enhanced mechanical properties for the plant’s coal pulverizers.
Using this innovative technology, the process for producing these composite pellets involves intimately mixing and extruding the wood fiber with polyvinyl chloride in such a way that all of the exterior surfaces of the fiber are coated or wetted by the polymer material. The resulting fuel is then heated to melt the polymer and molded into a round form with a specific dimension. The final product is a highly dense, odorless, smoke-free and non-combustible pellet with high thermal efficiency, low ash content and superior durability, strength and stability.
By integrating these advancements, advanced
wood pelletizing apparatus sets new standards in biomass conversion, enabling more efficient, environmentally friendly, and economically viable production of wood pellets. These advancements can contribute to the utilization of renewable energy sources and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
