According to the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service Global Agricultural Information Network report in August, Japan is expanding its FIT program to increase imports of wood pellets, which are expected to reach 4.25 million tons this year. This plan aims to incorporate more renewable energy.
After the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident in 2011, the FIT plan expanded from only solar energy to include biomass, wind, geothermal, and small hydropower. The FIT plan maintains a fixed price, and the feed-in tariff subsidy plan will be launched in 2022. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will set a fixed electricity premium. Wood pellets meet sustainability standards, and biomass power plants are required to calculate greenhouse gas emissions and provide information to verify emissions calculations.
In addition to
wood pellets and domestic biomass, palm kernel shells also provide fuel for biomass power generation, with plans to introduce PKS sustainability requirements. About 54% of wood pellet imports in 2022 will come from Vietnam, 31% from Canada, and 7% from the United States. In 2021, domestic wood chip consumption is 10.288 million tons, in 2022 it is expected to be 10.4 million tons, and in 2023 it is expected to be 10.6 million tons. The consumption of imported wood chips in 2021 is 405,000 tons, which is expected to drop to 300,000 tons in 2022 and 2023. Japan will consume 3.56 million tons of imported PKS in 2021, and 4.142 million tons in 2022, and is expected to reach 4.8 million tons this year.
