Minnova announces positive biomass gasification test results
Minnova Corp. is a clean technology and gold mine development company based in Canada. The company announced aggressive biomass gasification tests of corn stover in Romania and pineapple waste in Costa Rica, reaching more than 50% hydrogen in the syngas.
The tests were carried out at the Department of Biosciences, Agri-Food and Environmental Technology, University of Teramo, Italy, supervised by Prof. Ing. Sergio Rapagnà. Corn and pineapple waste samples were dried and pelletized at a
commercial wood pellet plant operating on a near-future industrial scale.
The particle sample is fed into a fluidized bed reactor designed by DUMA for gasification under controlled conditions. Corn and pineapple samples exceeded expectations for syngas flow rates and hydrogen levels (minimum target of 50% hydrogen).
Tar concentrations in the syngas of both samples were consistent with tests of comparable biomass. Observations during the test indicated that the mass (percent hydrogen content) and volume (gas production Nm3/kg daf) of the resulting syngas could be further improved by adjusting a number of operational parameters.
With the positive gasification results, detailed techno-economic studies for the projects in Costa Rica and Romania can now begin. Domestic work will include solicitation of biomass supply agreements, commercial offtake agreements for green hydrogen, electricity or by-product heat, and eventual commercial site selection.
The results show that the goal of producing high hydrogen (H2) content syngas from biomass gasification continues to make progress; i) purified into green hydrogen, ii) used for direct power generation, or iii) further processed to produce other valuable biofuels.
Southeast Asia: Decarbonizing the Energy Sector - CTA Plan 2022-2023
Minnova has been selected to participate in the Canadian Technology Accelerator (CTA) program with the specific goal of achieving a climate goal of net
zero carbon emissions in Southeast Asia between 2050 and 2065. Selected companies have demonstrated technology maturity (TRL) of level 6 or higher, marketability and innovative technology. The selection of the company's third-generation
biomass gasification technology provides an opportunity to produce green hydrogen, electricity and a variety of other valuable biofuels to play a leading role in decarbonizing power generation infrastructure in Southeast Asia. Global Affairs Canada's CTA program assists high-potential, technology-focused Canadian smes to accelerate their development.
Southeast Asia has ambitious carbon reduction targets and its current energy supply is dominated by fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas). Biomass may be the only viable, carbon-neutral, sustainable and safe alternative to current baseload electricity production. The region's diverse supply of biomass waste (such as agricultural residues, woody biomass, animal waste, and municipal solid waste), combined with its high-growth, industrialized economy, and commitment to reducing carbon emissions, met general site selection criteria.
Gorden Glenn, President and CEO of Minnova, commented: "These impressive test results affirm our confidence in our technology that
biomass gasification can be a technically feasible and economical route to large-scale green hydrogen production. The results not only exceeded our expectations, but also had the potential to further increase the hydrogen content in the syngas. We were selected to participate in the Southeast Asia CTA project, which reconfirmed that our third-generation
biomass gasification technology is a marketable technology, Provides a truly carbon-neutral solution for the production of green hydrogen and electricity from locally available waste
biomass around the world. The market opportunity in Southeast Asia is extremely attractive and adds to our existing global business development pipeline, including Canada, Europe, Central America and Africa. We are accelerating our transition to an operational cleantech company as we continue to innovate and acquire or develop intellectual property globally related to green hydrogen, renewable electricity and other carbon-reducing technologies .”
